SONG PROFILE: PRETTY WINGS

Pretty Wings,  the upcoming single from MAXWELL, BLACKsummersnight (2009), and recently placed at song 35 on The 80 Best Songs of ’08 (VIBE.com), is a song that many fans have come to adore. From listening to the words and experiencing through the music, the feelings behind the song, from Maxwell’s point-of-view, seems like he was in a relationship that reached that fork in the road. You know, the point where you can either stay in the relationship (not necessarily one in sexual nature but any type) or get out of the relationship. It appears, he made the decision to end the relationship, “if I can’t have you, let love set you free…” but not with some regrets, “I came wrong, you were right…”

Over the past few months, Maxwell music lovers have expressed their feelings for the title track. For one, they love the song in its entirety. But secondly, the interpretation of this song by some, really captured my interest. I was personally, amazed that the Pretty Wings was equated to the loss of a loved one, not only by death but also of a friendship and love. When taking another look at the lyrics, I can clearly see those interpretations represented. “I had to set you free, away from me, to see clearly the way that love can be, when you are not with me.” How Do You Interpret the Song?

NOTE: Couldn’t decide which (live) version of Pretty Wings to place in this blog, so I encourage you to go over to youtube.com and watch each and every performance and pick which one you like best before the studio version hits.

Enjoy these lyrics, if you see a mistake, please mention it.

PRETTY WINGS  – MAXWELL
written and produced by Hod David and Musze

Verse – 1
Time will bring the real end of our trial
One day there’ll be no remnants
No trace, no residual
Feelings within ya
The day you won’t remember me

Your face will
Be the reason I smile
But I will not see what I cannot have forever
I’ll always love ya
I hope you feel the same

Oh, you played me dirty
Your game was so bad
You toyed with my affliction
Had to fill out my prescription
Found the remedy
I had to set you free
Away from me
To see clearly
The way that love can be
When you are not with me

I had to lead, I have to leave
I had to lead, I had to live

Chorus:
If I can’t have you, let love set you
Free to fly yo pretty wings around

Pretty wings
Your, pretty wings
Your pretty wings
Pretty wings around

Verse – 2
I came wrong
You were right
Transformed your love into like
Baby believe me
I’m sorry I told you lies

I turned day into night
Sleep till I die a thousand times
I should’ve showed you
Better nights, better times, better days
I miss you more and more

Chorus:
If I can’t have you, let love set you
Free to fly your pretty wings around

Pretty wings your, pretty wings your
Pretty wings your, pretty wings around

So Pretty wings your, pretty wings, around
Pretty wings your, pretty wings around

Sang pretty wings, oh pretty wings, yeah
Pretty wings, Pretty wings around

Little, pretty wings

Darlin, Darlin, yeah
Pretty wings your, pretty wings, around
Pretty wings your, pretty wings around

Pretty, Pretty, Pretty
Someone better is gonna love you
Someone, someone’s gonna love you baby, yeah

Pretty wings your, pretty wings around,
Pretty wings your, Pretty wings around (x4)

(BLACKsummersnight 2009)

Music like poetry, can have so many different meanings. It all depends on the listener and deliverer.
Like you mentioned, could the song be about lost love through a break up, loss through death or just the end of a season?

What we love about Maxwell is his ability to poetically sing to our situations. For example, I have lost two great loves of my life in the last three year, my mum and dad through death and in way I can relate the song to the various emotions that I went through when in grief . Death did play me dirty but as I came to terms with the fact that they are never coming back, I had to set them free.

All the same, I like the thought of a lost love and all of us being here to love Maxwell back to life, love him till he grows his wings again, love him until he can fly, soaring high as an eagle.
